Quick Pick vs own numbers

The odds are the same. The control is different.

Quick Pick is convenient. Choosing your own numbers lets you organize and track a portfolio. Neither method predicts the next draw.

THE VERDICT

Neither method makes a valid line more likely to win. Choosing your own numbers gives you control over organization; Quick Pick gives you convenience.

Each play includes one six-number Classic selection plus a separate automatic Gold Ball Draw Number. Game rules and prices can change; confirm them with your provincial lottery operator before playing.

What actually changes

Choose based on control, not a promise of better odds.

Both routes produce valid combinations. The practical differences appear before and after the draw.

For a current Lotto Max play, Quick Pick generates all four selections automatically. If you choose your own numbers, you select the first line and the terminal generates the other three.

01

Convenience

Quick Pick is the fastest route. The lottery terminal generates the numbers and there is nothing to prepare.

02

Portfolio control

Player-chosen lines can be reviewed together to reduce accidental overlap and fit an exact line budget.

03

Repeatability

A saved portfolio preserves the numbers, method and seed before the draw so the result can be evaluated honestly.

04

Emotional preference

Favourite numbers may make a ticket feel personal. That preference is valid, but it is not statistical evidence.

SAME FOR BOTH

Draw probability

  • Every valid combination is treated equally in a fair draw.
  • The same number of distinct lines owns the same number of jackpot combinations.
  • Hot, cold or meaningful numbers do not become more likely.
  • More lines cost more regardless of how they were selected.
DIFFERENT BETWEEN THEM

How the portfolio is managed

  • Quick Picks are automatic and independently convenient.
  • Own numbers are visible before purchase.
  • Coordinated lines can manage overlap across the portfolio.
  • Saved plans can be scored against the official result.

THE IMPORTANT DISTINCTION

Better organized does not mean more likely to hit the jackpot.

Coverage can spread matches across a portfolio and reduce repeated number slots. But if two portfolios contain the same number of distinct valid lines, both own the same number of possible jackpot combinations.

Common questions

Quick Picks, personal numbers and probability.

Are Quick Pick numbers more likely to win?

No. In a fair draw, a valid Quick Pick line and a valid player-chosen line have the same probability. The method used to select the numbers does not change the draw.

Do more lottery winners use Quick Pick?

Winner counts alone do not establish an advantage because Quick Picks may represent a large share of tickets sold. A fair comparison would need both winner counts and the number of each type of ticket purchased.

Why choose my own numbers if the odds are the same?

Choosing your own numbers lets you control repetition, review overlap across several lines, reuse a saved plan and keep a pre-draw record. Those are organization benefits, not predictive advantages.

Can I choose every line in a Lotto Max play?

Under current Ontario rules, a $6 Lotto Max play has four selections. You may choose the first selection, while the other three are generated automatically; alternatively, Quick Pick can generate all four.

Should I avoid birthdays when choosing lottery numbers?

Birthday-based choices do not reduce the probability of matching the draw, but they concentrate selections in the lower part of the number range. If a popular combination wins, the prize may need to be shared with other winners.
